St. Barnabas was the first, and is now the most experienced, state-certified ventilator-dependent facility in Bronx County. Our staff of specially trained physicians, nurses and technologists assures the finest quality care for ventilator-dependent adult residents.

• The unit has 22 ventilator-dependent beds and a pleasant décor with home-like surroundings.

• Our specially trained nurses and technologists provide 24-hour care. We have state-of-the-art electronic monitoring.

• A sophisticated alarm system is incorporated on every ventilator equipment.

• Our ventilators are portable and can be attached to wheelchairs, providing ventilator-dependent residents with mobility and opportunities to socialize.

• All respiratory therapists are certified and highly qualified to meet the special needs of ventilator-dependent patients.

• Treatment for asthma, emphysema and other chronic conditions is provided by the Attending Physician who is also Board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. A team of specialists is available for immediate consultation.

• Rehabilitation services are provided on site and include strengthening due to decreased physical endurance, instruction in bed mobility, standing activities and gait training when possible. Respiratory therapists accompany the patient for therapy.

• Bathing is done in the comfort of a specially designed whirlpool bathtub that enhances skin care and circulation.

• All ventilator-dependent residents are evaluated for removal from supportive equipment on a regular basis. We are proud of our high rate of success in weaning patients from the ventilator.
